If your child's glasses prescription seems to get stronger every year, simply updating the lenses may not be the only option. Childhood myopia, or nearsightedness, often progresses as the eyes continue growing. Myopia management is designed to slow that progression rather than only correcting blurry distance vision.
At Gregg Family Eye Care in Secane, we provide myopia control options for school-aged children, including Ortho-K, specialized soft multifocal contact lenses, and low-dose atropine. The right approach depends on your child's prescription, eye health, age, lifestyle, and rate of progression.
Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back or its focusing structures cause light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. Children typically notice that distant objects, such as classroom boards or signs, appear blurry.
A stronger prescription can restore clear vision, but it does not necessarily slow the underlying progression.
Higher levels of myopia are associated with a greater lifetime risk of conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic macular disease. Slowing excessive eye growth during childhood may therefore have benefits beyond reducing dependence on stronger glasses.
Secane parents may notice changes before a child specifically says their vision is blurry. Watch for:
Squinting when looking across the classroom
Sitting closer to the television or screen
Difficulty recognizing distant signs
Frequent requests for stronger glasses
Moving closer to see presentations or sporting events
Complaints that distance vision has become less clear
Regular comprehensive eye exams allow us to monitor prescription changes and determine whether myopia management should be considered.
Orthokeratology, commonly called Ortho-K, uses specially designed rigid gas permeable contact lenses worn overnight.
While your child sleeps, the lenses temporarily reshape the front surface of the cornea. After removing them in the morning, many patients can see clearly throughout the day without glasses or daytime contacts.
Maintaining that daytime vision effect requires continued lens wear on the prescribed schedule. If Ortho-K use stops, the cornea gradually returns toward its original shape and the temporary vision-correction effect wears off.
That temporary reshaping should not be confused with myopia control. Research shows that Ortho-K can also slow axial eye growth in many children over time, which is the treatment's myopia-management benefit.
Ortho-K can be particularly appealing for children who play sports, swim, or dislike wearing glasses during school activities.
However, overnight contact lens wear requires responsibility. Children and parents need to follow cleaning, disinfection, handwashing, replacement, and follow-up instructions carefully. Sleeping in contact lenses carries a risk of eye infection, so proper hygiene and regular monitoring are essential.
A fitting also requires precise measurements of the cornea so the lenses can be customized appropriately.
Ortho-K is not the only approach. At Gregg Family Eye Care, myopia management may also include specialized soft multifocal contact lenses or low-dose atropine eye drops.
Soft multifocal contacts use specially designed optics intended to provide clear vision while helping slow myopia progression. Atropine uses prescription eye drops, typically in low concentrations, as another approach to slowing progression.
No treatment completely stops myopia in every child. We monitor your child's vision and adjust the plan according to how their eyes respond.
Earlier evaluation is important when a child develops myopia at a young age or shows continued prescription changes. The longer the eyes have left to grow, the more opportunity there may be for myopia to progress.
If your child's distance vision is getting blurrier or their prescription keeps increasing, schedule a myopia evaluation with Gregg Family Eye Care at 1266 Providence Road, Secane, PA 19018 by calling (610) 831-4300.
